Developing Parking Apprenticeships: Our Survey

DO YOU WANT A GROWTH IN PARKING SKILLS?

Parking Apprenticeships could be a useful tool

Introduction

The government has introduced a new structure to apprenticeships as part of their Skills Strategy. As a result of the new approach, we believe that the Parking Industry can encourage the growth of parking skills be developing Parking Apprenticeships. As a first step, Alpha Parking are working with our training partner City & Guilds, the BPA, the IPC and parking organisations to assess options for Parking Apprenticeships.

Possible Options

The government initiative encourages apprentices to develop industry focused and transferable skills and qualifications. Amongst a number of changes from the previous approach are two that are especially relevant for the Parking Industry. The first is that all age levels qualify for apprenticeships, which means that employees qualify if they are starting a second career or moving between roles. In addition, the apprenticeship requirements are specified by the appropriate industry rather than centrally. The aim is to encourage relevant and focused skills required by the industry rather then to dictate wider and less specific overall requirements .

A 0.5% Apprenticeship Levy on organisations with an annual payroll above £3,000,000 funds the new system. Effectively, organisations pay an additional tax unless the costs of internal apprenticeships are set off against the amount paid as the Levy.

Our initial suggestion is for two introductory 12 month apprenticeships which would be Level 2 Enforcement and Level 3 Notice Processing standards. In addition, a third “Introduction to Parking” Apprenticeship can straddle a wider range of parking skills. Furthermore, apprenticeships will be developed for the public and private parking sectors.
